Lamar Odom Fighting for His Life

Lamar Odom is fighting for his life after falling  unconsciousness at Dennis Hof‘s Love Ranch South in Pahrump, Nevada

Sources at the Love Ranch tell us … 35-year-old Odom arrived at the Ranch Saturday and was partying with the girls for days. A source at the Ranch said Lamar was taking an herbal substitute for Viagra. We spoke with Hof  … who tells us Tuesday afternoon, a woman went into Odom’s room in the VIP suites and found him unconscious.

We’re told the woman began screaming for the manager — who called 911. The manager rolled Lamar over on his side and saw “mucus-type liquid coming out of his nose and mouth.”An ambulance took Lamar to Pahrump hospital, where doctors intubated him … an indication he could not breathe on his own. We’re told Lamar is being airlifted from the hospital to Las Vegas for more treatment. Our sources tell us, “It’s not good.” We’re told Lamar had been partying at the ranch by himself — with no friends or entourage — and is now alone at the hospital

Verizon will drop phone contracts,

Verizon will stop offering phones at discounted prices when customers sign two-year service  Verizon is the nation’s largest

providers. This could result in some customers paying more but the move was made in the name of simplification.Verizon is the second national carrier, after T-Mobile, to end subsidies entirely for new customers. Things have been headed that way both at Verizon and throughout the industry, but it is still notable that the company is now eliminating such sales entirely.

A few carriers, namely Sprint, also offer leasing options for a lower monthly fee, but the customer doesn’t get to keep and resell the phone without additional payments. All wireless carriers have been trying to wean customers off subsidies, in which a $649 iPhone 6 goes for $200 with a two-year contract. Instead, carriers have been encouraging people to buy phones outright by paying the full retail price in monthly installments.

Verizon says there will be restrictions, but it didn’t elaborate. For instance, it wasn’t immediately clear whether customers keeping the current plan will still qualify for subsidized phones. Effective Aug. 13, prices for voice, text and data services will drop by roughly $20 per month compared with subsidized plans.  customers will no longer get the subsidies on the phone, valued at about $19 for an iPhone 6. But there are variations, so some will pay a bit more, others a bit less.

Verizon is also streamlining its data plans to four main options, ranging from “small” at 1 gigabyte to “x-large” at 12 gigabytes, all sharable under family plans. Verizon currently has 15 options ranging from 0.5 gigabyte to 100 gigabytes. Two gigabytes is plenty for most single-line customers, though a few hours of streaming video could eat that up.

Customers will no longer have two-year commitments, but they might be stuck with Verizon for two years anyway as monthly installments for the phone stretch over that time.

Those with contracts paid $60 a month for 1 gigabyte of data and $90 for 3 gigabytes. Subtract the $19 worth of subsidies on the iPhone 6, and the monthly cost was $41 for 1 gigabyte and $71 for 3 gigabytes. Those who were already buying their own phones paid $45 for 1 gigabyte and $75 for 3 gigabytes. Under the new plans, customers will pay $50 for 1 gigabyte (a price increase for both groups) and $65 for 3 gigabytes (a price cut). The 2 gigabyte plan is being discontinued, so customers will have to choose more or less.

Couples who bought or brought their own phones paid $100 for either 3 gigabytes or 6 gigabytes, thanks to steeper discounts Verizon had offered to customers who declined subsidies and chose larger data plans. For two lines, couples paid $130 a month for 3 gigabytes and $150 for 6 gigabytes under subsidized plans. Subtract the value of the subsidies ($38 for two iPhones), and you got $92 for 3 gigabytes and $112 for 6 gigabytes.Under the new plans, that couple will pay $85 for 3 gigabytes (a price cut) and $100 for 6 gigabytes (a price decrease from subsidized rates, but no change for others).

Tennessee Theater Shooting

A man wielding a gun, a hatchet and pepper spray was killed inside a Tennessee movie theater on Wednesday. Nashville Police, responding to reports of an active shooter, traded gunshots with the suspect. Don Aaron, Nashville Police spokesman, told reporters that one moviegoer was cut on a shoulder by a hatchet before police officers killed the 51-year-old suspect as he tried to escape out the back door.

No one has been transported to a hospital, but one guy, his daughter and another woman suffered irritation from pepper spray apparently used by the suspect, who was wearing a surgical mask. The suspect also had two backpacks with him, Aaron said. The bomb squad destroyed one backpack that contained a “hoax device,” Aaron said.

Police were called to the Carmike Hickory 8 movie theater complex in the Nashville suburb of Antioch at 1:15 p.m. CT. Two officers were already at the mall working a car accident when people came running toward them. The officers were inside the complex withing two minutes, Aaron said.

One officer entered the theater and exchanged fire with the gunman before backing away. The SWAT team arrived and had to don gas masks due to the heavy chemical spray in the theater, Aaron said.

A woman who worked at a Sprint store near the scene told CNN’s Brooke Baldwin that about three hours earlier, a man with two backpacks tried to enter her store through their back door.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent a team to help with the investigation. Original posting by
